Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy.

The AMMV Small Scale Renewable Energy project aim is to make the wards of Aberfan, Mount Pleasant and Merthyr Vale an exemplary zero carbon community. We'll do this by providing a wide range of renewable energy products that enable the village to reduce both its utility costs and carbon footprint.

The project covers:

• All public and privately-owned community buildings.

• A range of neighbouring CAT options. (Capital Asset Transferred Buildings) including Four community swimming pools.

• A range of local business premises Including Merthyr Football Club, Zoar Chapel.

• Communal areas - Cemetery, open spaces, paths, garden areas.

• A 550 residential home’s pilot.

• 250 of those homes generated through Ground Mounted Solar and Ground/Air source.

• EV rapid Charger hub located alongside the A470.

• An innovative Elderly Home Exchange Project - Power Homes.

• A skills academy to train participants in the installation and maintenance of renewable energy technologies. The maintenance and repair of our community energy sources.

The introduction of services provided through a range of community enterprise initiatives.

The Energy project was one of 8 projects selected to generate, use and sell community energy in Wales. A minimum of 1.6 million grant aid had been ring fenced for this project. With the inclusion of ground mounted solar, EV charger points and interest from Capital Asset Transfer partners that has now expanded to 1.54 million.  The AMMV Energy Works Project encompasses all objectives of the well-being of future generations Act as well as meeting stretching decarbonisation targets set by our Minister for the Environment Lesley Griffiths. These policies are set to reduce our reliance on energy generated from fossil fuels and to actively manage the transition to a low carbon economy.

Alongside the priorities the minister has set some very specific targets.

By 2020 Wales is to generate 70% electricity consumption from renewable sources Putting tis into perspective in 2015 only 32 % of electricity consumption in Wales was generated from renewable energy. This project will align directly to that target by generating an estimated 950,000 kwh of renewable energy per year. The AMV Energy Worx project aligns directly to the Minsters target to increase locally owned electricity capacity. By 2030 the target set is to have 1 GW of the renewable electricity capacity in Wales locally owned. In 2014 only 338 Megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity energy capacity was locally owned. From this figure only 8.3 MW, 5% was community owned. The highest ownership, 158.4 MW, 48% of locally owned electricity capacity was catergorised as domestically owned. The estimated renewable capacity for this project is 0.95 MW, 0.3%. A reasonable contribution to the national target from a 3800 + population.
